our mission

This Student Social Justice in Medical Education Coalition (SJMEC) was established in 2020 in response to the outcome of the Community Needs and Assets Assessment (CNAA) performed by the Institutional Justice and Inclusion External Senate Committee. The CNAA revealed in recommendation one, that the current medical curriculum excludes important issues of racism in medicine, social justice, diversity, and equity. Recognizing and learning from the work at UC Davis, an institution utilizing a coalition dedicated to health equity and antiracism with much success, we decided to implement a similar design at WSUSOM. We believe that our curriculum as a whole is lacking in inclusivity and a coalition will serve as a platform to ensure these issues are addressed and rectified. Our goal is to ensure that our curriculum is centered on a culture of inclusivity that aligns with our mission as an institution to care for our surrounding urban and underserved communities. As such, we intend to bring together stakeholders as the support to make the school improve and build social justice as well as inclusivity into the entirety of our medical education here at Wayne.

The three major focus areas of the coalition currently include: racial justice and equity, LGBTQ+ justice and equity, and climate justice. We plan to address these areas via systematic review of the current WSUSOM curriculum, literature and national institutional programmatic review, and informed structuring of curricular reform. Our student coalition has representatives on a Curriculum Management Committee Subcommittee that is led by Dr. Senthil Rajasekaran (Senior Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education) which is solely focused on tangibly building our requests and recommendations into the curriculum. The committee is also committed to longitudinal curricular review, quality assessment, and integration of new material surrounding the aforementioned focus areas.
